Usually, the root factors are subconscious and connected to stress. Nightmares can be a culprit, when it comes to grinding teeth in the middle of your sleep. Terrifying dreams or nightmares can be an instigator and a signal of stress, which can also result in you grinding your teeth. If you frequently wake up from disturbing dreams and you grind your teeth, it may be a good idea to treat the physical problem and also try to get to the root of the stress causing the nightmares.

This might be your predicament if you had difficulty with your jaw, plus you never had any drawbacks with grinding your teeth prior to his. No matter how it happens, a displaced jaw can be the cause of a problem with the alignment of the teeth, which can instigate you grinding your teeth.

A disorder that is related to teeth grinding is TMJ, or temporalmandibular joint pain. This creates pain or tension in the jaw, and can also cause teeth grinding. Unfortunately, this isn’t so simple for everyone, such as those who have to work overnight shifts. Of course, in some situations, sleep issues are instigated by elements were are able to control, like going to bed at a decent hour or steering clear of some foods late at night. If you assume that a sleep tactic is causing you to grind your teeth, you can at minimum make an effort to treat it when you’re getting your shut eye, such as a mouth guard.

Grinding of the teeth can have a plethora of instigators and can be correlated with physical or emotions issues. Sometimes, teeth grinding starts because of something that isn’t supposed to last long, like when your permanent teeth grew in or when you were going through a particularly difficult time in your life, but then turns into bruxism symptoms in spite of your efforts not to let that happen.

If this is the scenario, your physician or dentist can suggest someone who specializes in realigning jaw. If this is not the case and your jaw is aching it is possible you are grinding teeth in sleep. This is a habit that requires bruxism treatment..

It is not like when someone starts drinking or smoking to deal with stress and then can’t stop after the stress is gone. In conclusion:

It is said in many articles that bruxism may have an association with TMJ – Temporomandibular joint disorder. the tmj pain is usually thought to be associated because the first symptoms of teeth grinding in sleep is often a sore jaw. Now we can take a look at the the Bruxism symptoms that may indicate Tmj. Keeping in mind that Tmj is not as likely to promote teeth grinding as bruxism is likely to promote a sore jaw. The pain would be caused mostly from Jaw clenching. Tmj is a seperate disorder that can be holistically treated with tmj exercises therefore it is better to concentrate our thoughts on the following:

Not withstanding that you may need Tmj treatment the major bruxism causes are teeth grinding. Teeth grinding can happen at any time without the person of child being concsious of it happening. Nocturnal bruxism or sleep bruxism as it is commonly called is exactly that. grinding in your sleep. If you don’t develop a sore jaw and no-one tells you that you have nocturnal bruxism then you may not know until tooth wear is evident. It is vbest to break this habit early.

Bruxism in children is an alarming condition because of the damage it can do to young teeth. With children special care is needed to train them out of the habit. One should seek to learn natural training methods as praise for progress is what works best for bruxism in children. Never scald a child for not achieving.

There are a number of preventative forms of Bruxism treatment that will stop the wear from grinding teeth in sleep, but they are not Bruxism cures. Most often the wear from grinding teeth in sleep is caused without people knowing they do it.

One Bruxism Treatment method is to use a splint as a preventative method. Technically named as an Occlusa splint and more commonly known as a mouth guard or bruxism mouth guard they protect your teeth but do not cure your teeth grinding. Some people notice pain in the jaw from teeth grinding or another infliction like Jaw clenching. A bruxism mouth guard will, as stated, protect your teeth, but it will not reduce the pressure of your jaw clenching.

Bruxism Botox or botox as you are imagining is the product usually used in beauty surgery to compensate for ageing. It is used for treatment of the jaw muscles as a result of Jaw clenching producing the condition TMJ – disorder. The bruxism botox is injected into the jaw muscles reducing their strength. This in turn reduces the strength of your bite. You will need to assess if you will be able to chew hard foods like nuts with the weakened jaw muscles. Tmj exercises are an effective alternative.

As with beauty treatment Botox must be repeated as the effects of treatment wear off. Botox is not normally covered by private health funds and can be expensive as an ongoing treatment. A more practicle solution is to try a natural remedy.

Biofeedback is a method of treatment that uses monitors and electrodes to measure “involuntary” bodily processes and physiological functions. So the biofeedback treatment is measuring your bodily actions and your bodily reactions is simple. For teeth grinding in sleep conditions a low voltage battery operated electrical appliance is fitted into your mouth or attached to your teeth. When you beging teeth grinding an alarm rings or small electric shocks are given to make you aware of bruxing.

Malocclusion refers to a bite pattern that may not be normal, or a lower and upper jaw size or fit not being normal. Malocclusion can also be the result of jaw muscle problems or a mismatch between the jaw and tooth spacing or tooth size. For this conditon a medical specialist consultation is advised.

Other terms that are not related to causing a bruxism habit but are somtimes refered to in search results are:

Buccal segments. I have only been asked once ever about the term buccal segments. It is not an easy one to answer without a medical or dental background but in laymans language buccasl refers to a mouth cavity and/or the cheek. The term is relative to many mouth cavity and cheek conditions including blushing.

Another is Myoclonus. The term describes a condition or a symptom and is not a disease. Myoclonus in simple terms is twitching, an uncontrolled movement of muscles. Often they are tiny muscles allowing myoclonus to cause a twitching of the cheek, a corner of the mouth or an eye lid. Sometimes the twitches can range from tiny and unnoticed twitches to larger visible twitching.

Can you tell me why a bruxism mouth guard will not stop me from grinding.

  2. William says:

Ok thanks Bruxism. I did press on a button in the article above and I see you have 2 books and another product. Which one do you recommend as being the best?

    • bruxism says:

William if you are only suffering from bruxism in sleep then follow the instructions on the remedies page. Because your first question was about a bruxism mouth guard I assume you are grinding in your sleep. You did not mention jaw pain but I believe you most likely have it. Tmj pain is usually inevitable sooner or later. I suggest you get the “TMJ No More” ebook so you can get started right away.

  3. Alan says:

I have a similar problem. I dislike the thought of a cheap mouth guard and a proper dental guard is too expensive. Can you guarantee the Natural remedies will work?

    • bruxism says:

My guarantee is a good as your willingness to stop. Sorry to say it like that but you need to break a habit to stop bruxism. Relax and implement a program and stick to it. You can stop but it is up to you to make the effort and get started.

      • Alan says:

I have added the Mediline plus website link to my comment. It is basically in agreement with you.

There is no recognized TMJ specialty in dentistry. Therefore, see your dentist for a full evaluation if self-care measures do not help within several weeks.
